Until recently, our island was cursed to live only to the age of 23... No one ever survived longer and would eventually fall to illness.
It's why people hated the lycoris flowers, because they thought they could trim down their already short lifespans... or were especially superstitious about anything that could kill them sooner.

... but that scientist was a genius, and the leader of our country. He fell in love, and his lover died. Without his dedication to finding a cure, once he accomplished his life's goal... I think something in him shattered. A loneliness and a despair that no light or hope could touch.
So he ended up committing horrible experiments to try to bring her back, and a lot of people died until he was stopped. [ a beat ] I don't know what happens after that, but I do hope it gets better from here.
