Yeah, I think it's sweet you two are so nurturing though. There's definitely satisfaction to be had in watching something grow under your care.

I guess I have raised a couple wyverns.

Wyverns...?

They're like horse-sized dragons. We use them as steeds where I'm from.

[noirges]

What.... Dragons?! That's so amazing....!

[ Laughs. ]

I think so too. Galloping on horseback certainly isn't dull, but I've gotten used to the views of flying up high.

[noirges]

I've never even dreamed of it...

[ a little awed ]

I wish I could see, too. Maybe we could've left our island and gotten more help if it was possible to take to the skies.

[midway]

You've never left the island?

[ Head tilt. ]

Because of the curse?

Lots of reasons?

The waters around the island make it hard to access in general, but then the curse made us isolated because people thought it would spread. Then there were the Relivers, which Scien didn't want his technology leaving the island...

We only ever had one person in our recorded history come to our island from the outside, and we call him the Drifter.

[midway]

[ claude: inbreeding...? what is the population of this island? ]

The Drifter? Did people ostracize him?

[ WELL IT'S NOT A FULL POPULATION BUT STILL DAMN ]

Ostracize... I think it's more like they were frenetic over him. They thought that our 23 year old life span was normal until he arrived, and then they were consumed by despair realizing that our island was cursed.

So they consumed all the Drifter's knowledge and then tried to study him, thinking that his body would lead to an answer that would cure everyone else. [ frowns ] This did happen over a hundred years ago but... I think it'd still happen today.

[midway]

Studied him like...? Ethically?

[ Whoa. ]

[noirges]

[ thinks about the people involved ]

Probably not.

The Drifter went into hiding at some point... and I don't think any reasonable person could blame him.

[midway]

Interesting... I don't envy him. Seems like a lonely life.

But I can't blame the people of your island for wanting a cure either. 23 years isn't a long time at all.

[ he looks elsewhere for a bit before he makes a soft noise of understanding ]

Scien found a cure eventually, at least. So I'm lucky or else I'd be bedridden by now.

[ oh to be 22 and nearly at the end of your lifespan ]

... but I do feel for the Drifter. To be trapped away from home, trying to help others, but having your life threatened... and outliving everyone you love.

How did we get here? I was so excited about wyverns. Aren't we going to the hot spring?

[midway]

[ He laughs. ]

Not in the mood to talk about the history of your home anymore? Well, I'm definitely up for a soak.

[noirges]

It’s pretty depressing.

[ moves to get up and offers claude a hand ]

I don’t mind telling you anything, but don’t you think we should try to have a good time for a while?

[midway]

[ Accepts! Thank you. ]

Alright, perhaps another time. For now you can focus on making sure I don't fall asleep in the bath.

[ yaaay handholds on the way back to the hot spring ]

Do you not get good sleep, Claude?

It's not that I don't sleep... I've always had a bit of a strange sleep schedule.

I sleep a couple hours, wake up, sleep a little more. Like that.

[noirges]

Ooh, got it. Then I'll have to regale you with way more fun tales in the spring to make sure you don't get bored of me.

[ Pretends to doze off while they are walking. ]

I think I just got called boring?!

[ Laughs, and nudges him. ]
