[ claude finds love later... it's real and true...
it's not affection week anymore but this is yves so it is in fact affection week again and once claude gets his bouquet, yves will just link their arms so that they're side by side. leans over to sniff claude's bouquet annoyingly ]
I think so too. [ softly, sincerely ] I'd like to be in love one day, but...
Even just seeing it arrive for others is enough to make my whole day.
My love of reading? I suppose you could call it that... [ He thinks. ] I guess it came out of necessity. I've always been a noble, which means I have to be well educated since the decisions I make affects those whom I govern.
There are lots of problems to solve, so... I had to find answers. And one way to do that is by reading.
There's always problems to solve. Some years a territory doesn't yield as much produce as they expect, and we need to resolve the issue of food scarcity. Sometimes I read about agricultural practices in different parts of the world to see if there's anything we can do differently.
There are inheritance disputes, managing relationships between the counties, determining how to allocate troops... Right now we're at war as well, so there's that to deal with.
[ oh! he makes a little bit of an affronted face at the idea of no one being polite to claude.... annoyed on his behalf.
he frowns to himself places a hand over claude's forearm to squeeze it briefly. ]
... you must work really hard, Claude. I wish people would be more respectful to you, if only to acknowledge that. That's a lot on your shoulders, and a lot of people to take care of.
[ PEOPLE TREAT HIM LIKE AN ANNOYING UPSTART... which he kind of is.
Anyway, he pats the hand on his forearm. He doesn't seem too bothered by any of it, though it does seem like the gears are turning as his mind goes to all the problems yet unsolved. ]
It's alright. When you have that much privilege, you should have the responsibility to match. [ (uncle ben voice)
He looks thoughtful again. ]
As for my hometown... It's hot. I'm not sure you'd survive all the sun.
No snow... We didn't have these holidays either... Most people really focused on just living day by day and trying to survive with what little time we had.
So I guess it's one of the few ways this place feels like heaven, to get to experience things I might've liked while alive - with people whose company I enjoy.
Monsieur Lucas and Adolphe haven't mentioned it...?
[ the way yves has been talking about it less bc he assumes the others got to it ]
Until recently, our island was cursed to live only to the age of 23... No one ever survived longer and would eventually fall to illness.
It's why people hated the lycoris flowers, because they thought they could trim down their already short lifespans... or were especially superstitious about anything that could kill them sooner.
Well, I didn't die from the illness? So that's good.
[ he does have to give credit where credit is due. but.
he just looks around at all the romantic decorations around them and contemplates how deeply he still craves love, despite everything he's seen ]
... but that scientist was a genius, and the leader of our country. He fell in love, and his lover died. Without his dedication to finding a cure, once he accomplished his life's goal... I think something in him shattered. A loneliness and a despair that no light or hope could touch.
So he ended up committing horrible experiments to try to bring her back, and a lot of people died until he was stopped. [ a beat ] I don't know what happens after that, but I do hope it gets better from here.

Ahah... that makes the two of us.
[ a little sadly, because a place in turmoil really could use more love? ]
But no, I don't. It wasn't really in the cards for me. What about you?
no subject
Nah, never had much time for that kind of thing. [ Takes a bouquet. ] It is nice to see though.
It's just nice to see people being happy.

Looking amused. ]
Yeah, I'm getting the sense that you're a bit of a romantic.
no subject
though at the comment he just laughs ]
Ah, well… it’s part of my own selfishness in the end.
[ a little glance at claude, though his expression is playful. as if anticipating a question: ]
But I think you’ve already gathered enough of my secrets?
no subject
Are you in need of a break from my incessant line of questioning?
no subject
I'll tell you anything about me that you want to know. I don't mind.
[ if claude genuinely asked then yves would fold immediately ]
But... I want to know you, too. We always get wrapped up talking about me... It's making me feel like a questionable friend.
no subject
[ Hehe. ]
I don't mind talking about myself either.
no subject
[ this time... he larps claude... his curiosity is so obvious, but he's invested in each question equally ]
Where does your love of reading come from? What's your hometown like? What's the first thing you'll do when you get to go home?

no subject

yves just watches for a moment, humming. ]
... you do a lot more than the nobles that I'm used to, but you do sound like someone I know...
[ and so yves makes a note to himself to really do whatever he can to help claude out so he doesn't feel the need to take everything on himself ]
You think? I just experienced snow for the first time earlier today, but I wonder how much hotter it can get.
